The TV Manifesto
TV is good. It is better now than ever before. It has the ability to reach broad audiences, and as a writer’s medium it also has the ability to tell engaging, relatable stories over time.
TV is important. Though the digital age has yet to settle out, episodic entertainment isn’t going anywhere. Much like newspaper serials, novels, and feature film trilogies, television now thrives on consistently delivering a compelling narrative.
TV is my calling. For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to be a part of this world. I also have a gift and passion for writing, and my life’s ambition is to bring those worlds together and live through the resulting explosion.
TV is its own education. There are plenty of graduate programs in screenwriting. There are probably a number of advantages to taking this path. One of the disadvantages for me is financial. Given the wealth of resources available to me, I am attempting to create my own online classroom and share what I learn with others.
TV is all about the writing. There are also plenty of TV industry news websites. But not many of them seem to approach the business from the perspective of a writer. You’ll find lots of fawning over actors and ratings. My goal is not to regurgitate (ahem, aggregate) what you’ve already read on Twitter or other sites. It’s to filter that information through the lens of a working writer.
